Understanding Digital Eye Strain (Computer Vision Syndrome)
In the 21st century, our eyes are under siege. The average urban Indian spends upwards of 9 hours a day looking at screens—be it smartphones, laptops, tablets, or televisions. This prolonged near-work focus creates a condition known as Digital Eye Strain (DES) or Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). The symptoms are pervasive: dry eyes, red eyes, headaches, blurred vision, neck and shoulder pain, and even difficulty refocusing on distant objects after long work sessions.
The Science of Blue Light:
Screens emit High-Energy Visible (HEV) blue light. Blue light has a very short wavelength, which means it produces a
higher amount of energy. When this light strikes the back of the eye (the retina), it can cause oxidative stress.
Cumulative exposure over a lifetime is suspected to contribute to the early onset of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD),
a leading cause of irreversible blindness. Furthermore, blue light suppresses the production of Melatonin, the sleep hormone,
disrupting your circadian rhythm and leading to insomnia.
Our Solution:
At DeepNanda Opticians, we prescribe specific Blue Light Filtering lenses. These lenses selectively block the harmful 415-455nm
spectrum of blue light while allowing the beneficial turquoise blue light (which helps wakefulness) to pass through.
Combined with an Anti-Reflective (AR) coating to reduce glare from overhead lights and screen reflections, these lenses
significantly reduce eye fatigue. We recommend the "20-20-20 Rule" to all our patients: Every 20 minutes, look at something
20 feet away for 20 seconds.
